The goal

Many research projects are highly relevant to our everyday lives and society. Scientists face an increasing demand to communicate scientific findings to a broader public. Yet, it’s not only an additional task on your to do list – it is also fun and personally very rewarding! This workshop is designed to support you in improving your writing skills. The focus of the workshop is on writing popular science texts in print and online media (e.g., blog posts, press releases).

Writing workshop: Topics, titles, teasers …
What do I want to achieve with my article - inform, entertain, criticize...?
What tone fits my topic and target audience best?
How do I structure my article?
Which stylistic elements are appropriate and enhance readability and engagement?

The implementation

"This advanced workshop is designed for participants who already possess foundational knowledge and practical experience in science communication. Throughout the seminar, you will learn specific tips and techniques for crafting engaging popular science articles. The workshop is highly interactive, featuring both in-session writing exercises and a writing assignment to be completed between the two workshop dates. You will become familiar with key elements of effective popular science writing. Through a blend of theoretical input and practical exercises, you will learn how to present scientific findings in a clear, accessible, and compelling manner, while also identifying and avoiding common pitfalls. By the end of the workshop, you will have written your own article based on your research and received constructive feedback on it. Participants are expected to come with an initial idea of the topic they wish to write about."

Instructors

Dr. Silvana Weber is a research associate, trainer and consultant at the LMU Center for Leadership and People Management. She studied psychology at the University of Göttingen and UC Berkeley and subsequently completed her doctorate at the University of Koblenz-Landau (2016) with international research stays in Australia and Austria. In addition to her academic work (substitute professor of social psychology 2020/21 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, ongoing habilitation at the University of Würzburg), she is currently receiving training as a systemic counselor and therapist. As co-editor of the In-Mind Magazine, she is actively involved in the field of science communication.
